Server monitoring

Monitor your Ubuntu servers in under a minute

Ubuntu ships with everything the Statance agent needs — bash, curl and systemd — so installation is a single command. The agent runs as a systemd service and survives the reboots that unattended-upgrades schedules.

What to monitor on Ubuntu

  • 01UptimeA reset uptime counter tells you unattended-upgrades or a kernel livepatch rebooted the box.
  • 02Root and /var disk usageOld kernels in /boot and journal logs in /var/log are the usual culprits on Ubuntu.
  • 03Memory and swapSnap services and Java apps are common memory hogs on default installs.
  • 04CPU and loadCatch a stuck apt process or a runaway cron job.
  • 05NetworkThroughput per interface, including netplan bridges and WireGuard tunnels.

Set it up

  1. Grab your API key

Sign up free and copy the key from the dashboard.

  2. Install the agent

Works on Ubuntu 18.04 through 24.04 LTS, on x86_64 and arm64.

    curl -fsSL https://statance.com/install.sh | sudo bash -s -- YOUR_API_KEY
  3. Confirm with systemd

    You should see “active (running)”.

    sudo systemctl status statance-agent
  4. Set up alerts

Start with server-down, disk above 85% and memory above 90%.

Recommended alerts for Ubuntu

  • Server stopped reporting for 5 minutes (down)
  • CPU above 90% for 10 minutes
  • Memory used above 90% for 5 minutes
  • Any disk above 85% used
  • /boot above 80% (old kernels piling up)

Ubuntu monitoring FAQ

Does it work on Ubuntu on ARM (Graviton, Ampere, Raspberry Pi)?

Yes. The agent is a shell script, so architecture does not matter.

Is it available as an apt package?

Not currently. The installer is a short, readable shell script — download it from statance.com/install.sh and inspect it before running.

Will it survive do-release-upgrade?

Yes. It only depends on bash, curl and systemd, which every Ubuntu release keeps.
