Windows Server monitoring with a PowerShell agent

On Windows the agent is a PowerShell script that reads performance counters and CIM data, then runs as a scheduled task under SYSTEM. No MSI, no .NET install, nothing to reboot.

What to monitor on Windows Server

  • 01Processor timeFrom the \Processor(_Total)\% Processor Time counter.
  • 02Memory and page fileCommitted bytes approaching the commit limit causes allocation failures.
  • 03VolumesFree space on C: and every data volume.
  • 04Network adaptersBytes sent/received per adapter.
  • 05ProcessesTop processes by CPU and working set.

Set it up

  1. Open PowerShell as Administrator

Windows PowerShell 5.1 or PowerShell 7 both work.

  2. Run the installer

It installs to C:\ProgramData\Statance and registers a scheduled task that starts at boot.

    iwr -useb https://statance.com/install.ps1 | iex; Install-Statance -Key YOUR_API_KEY
  3. Verify

The task should show as Running.

    Get-ScheduledTask -TaskName "Statance Agent"

Recommended alerts for Windows Server

  • Server stopped reporting for 5 minutes (down)
  • CPU above 90% for 10 minutes
  • Memory used above 90% for 5 minutes
  • Any disk above 85% used
  • C: drive above 90%

Windows Server monitoring FAQ

Which Windows versions are supported?

Windows Server 2016 and later, and Windows 10/11. Older versions with PowerShell 5.1 usually work but are not tested.

What if script execution is restricted?

The installer sets the scheduled task to run with -ExecutionPolicy Bypass for the agent script only; it does not change your machine-wide policy.
